Osceola County Courthouse: Florida's Oldest Active Courthouse

Near Orlando, Florida

The red brick Romanesque courthouse in downtown Kissimmee holds the distinction of being the oldest courthouse in Florida still used for judicial purposes. Built between eighteen eighty-nine and eighteen ninety and dedicated on May sixth, eighteen ninety, it cost twenty-five thousand dollars and was designed by F.C.

Johnson. Its three-story tower, arched windows, and load-bearing brick walls in common bond pattern made it one of the most substantial public buildings in Central Florida at the time. A new county courthouse was built in two thousand three, but the third floor of the historic building still functions as a courtroom.

The entire structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen seventy-seven.
