The Four Freedoms Monument and Captain Colin Kelly

Florida

In the center of downtown Madison, Florida, at the corner of East Base Street and North Range Street, a bronze monument rises from a small park that carries an outsized history. Four angels stretch upward on the sculpture, each representing one of the freedoms Franklin Roosevelt declared the birthright of every human being: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.

Roosevelt had proclaimed those four freedoms in his address to Congress on January sixth, nineteen forty-one, eleven months before Pearl Harbor. The speech reframed the coming war not as a defense of territory but as a defense of universal human dignity. Within three years, the sculptor Walter Russell had given those ideals a permanent form, and in June of nineteen forty-four, with American soldiers fighting across Normandy, the monument was dedicated in this small north Florida town.

The dedication was personal. Madison was the hometown of Captain Colin P. Kelly, Junior, one of the first American heroes of the Pacific war. Kelly was an Army Air Corps bomber pilot flying a B-seventeen out of the Philippines. On December tenth, nineteen forty-one, in the Philippines, just days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Kelly's crew attacked Japanese shipping in the waters north of Luzon. His plane was hit by Japanese fighters on the return flight. Kelly ordered his crew to bail out and stayed at the controls long enough for all of them to escape before the aircraft exploded. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously.

President Roosevelt wrote a letter addressed to the President of the United States in nineteen fifty-six, asking that Kelly's infant son be given an appointment to West Point.

The monument in Madison honors both Kelly's courage and the ideals his death was said to defend. It stands today on the same highway he would have traveled coming home, a quiet marker in a quiet town that carries a very big story.
