The Phillies and Clearwater: Baseball's Longest Spring Marriage

Near Clearwater Beach, Florida

Since nineteen forty-seven, the Philadelphia Phillies baseball club has trained in Clearwater every spring, making it one of the longest continuous spring training relationships between a Major League Baseball team and a single city. The Phillies and Clearwater grew up together in the modern baseball era. For decades the team worked out at Jack Russell Stadium, a classic small Florida ballpark that opened in nineteen fifty-five and where players who would become household names in Philadelphia ran bases and refined their mechanics in the January sunshine.

Jack Russell Stadium was replaced in two thousand four by a new facility initially called Bright House Networks Field and later renamed Spectrum Field and then BayCare Ballpark, a modern park that also serves as home to the Clearwater Threshers, the Phillies' Class A minor league affiliate. The presence of the Phillies for more than seventy-five consecutive spring seasons has shaped Clearwater's civic identity in ways both practical and sentimental. Spring training draws tens of thousands of fans to the area in February and March each year, filling hotels when the off-season would otherwise be slow, providing a preview of the upcoming season when baseball hunger is at its peak.

The partnership has survived roster upheavals, ownership changes on both sides, stadium disputes, and the full economic cycle from postwar boom to bust and back. Clearwater has become, in the language of Phillies fans, simply where the team goes every winter, as natural as spring itself.
