Acworth, Georgia

Georgia

Acworth, on the northern shore of Lake Acworth in Cobb County, was founded as a railroad stop on the Western and Atlantic line in eighteen forty and named for Acworth, New Hampshire, the hometown of an early railroad engineer. The town became a modest cotton market through the mid-nineteenth century, then suffered Union occupation and partial burning during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign in eighteen sixty-four. Acworth's lakefront rebounded, and today the town of around twenty-two thousand is one of the most lake-oriented communities in metro Atlanta, with two public beaches on the reservoir and a restored Victorian downtown along Main Street. The local saying has it that Acworth is the Lake City, a title that suits the breezy summer atmosphere along the water's edge that defines the town's present character.
