Adairsville, Georgia

Georgia

Adairsville in Bartow County takes its name from the Adair family, Scottish settlers who married into the Cherokee and lived among them here in the early nineteenth century before the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation in eighteen thirty-eight and thirty-nine. After removal, the Western and Atlantic Railroad came through, and settlers platted the town around the depot in the eighteen forties. Adairsville saw action during the Atlanta Campaign of eighteen sixty-four when Confederate cavalry under General Joseph Wheeler clashed with Union forces near the town as Sherman's army drove south. The historic downtown retains several nineteenth-century commercial buildings, and the Adairsville Inn, built around eighteen oh two as a stagecoach tavern, claims to be one of the oldest operating inns in Georgia.
