Bradwell Institute: Where the South Got a School
Georgia
In eighteen seventy-one, Samuel Dowse Bradwell founded an institute on this site in Hinesville, Georgia, that would anchor education in Liberty County for generations. Bradwell, a Confederate veteran and Liberty County man, set out after the war to build a real school for the community, and the institution he started carried the Bradwell family name for generations. It grew into Bradwell Institute, a public high school that became a cornerstone of the region.
The park you're near today was established in nineteen seventy-four in his memory, built by the City of Hinesville with federal assistance and support from the Liberty County Garden Clubs. Not every school gets a park. Bradwell's apparently earned one.
