Commerce, Georgia: From Harmony Grove to King Cotton

Georgia

The town you are passing through has had two names, and each one tells a story. When the first settlers arrived here in seventeen eighty-four, the place was known as Groaning Rock. By eighteen oh eight a trading post had taken the name Harmony Grove. It was a farm community on Sandy Creek, the kind of quiet crossroads where a church and a grist mill were enough to anchor a town for a century.

Then came cotton. By the early nineteen hundreds, this stretch of northeast Georgia had become one of the most productive cotton-market corridors in the state. Farmers drove wagons in from Jackson, Franklin, and Banks counties to sell their bales. In nineteen oh four, the townspeople voted to rename the place Commerce, because that is precisely what they had become. The name stuck. Today Commerce sits at the edge of greater Atlanta's growing reach, better known for its outlet malls than its cotton wagons, but the name still carries the ambition of that original declaration.
