Metter: How a Sawmill Town Became a County Seat
Georgia
Metter got its start in eighteen eighty-nine as a settlement around a sawmill near Yam Gandy Creek in what was then western Bulloch County. The town incorporated in nineteen oh three. Then in nineteen fourteen, local leaders led a campaign to carve a new county out of three existing ones.
They convinced the Georgia legislature, and Candler County was born, named for former Governor Allen D. Candler. Metter became the county seat.
Today Metter's slogan plays on its own name: Everything's Better in Metter.
