SCAD Museum of Art: Inside the Nation's Last Antebellum Railroad Headquarters
Near Tybee Island, Georgia
This building is part of the only surviving antebellum railroad complex in the United States. It served as the central offices of the Central of Georgia Railway, which organized in eighteen thirty-three and eventually stretched across the state. Today the Savannah College of Art and Design has transformed it into the SCAD Museum of Art, which began in two thousand two as the Earle Newton Center and took its present name in two thousand six.
The museum collects works from ancient Egypt through the contemporary moment, with a particular strength in African art and fashion. The college itself launched in nineteen seventy-nine in the old Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory nearby, and has since turned dozens of Savannah's neglected historic buildings into academic facilities, which is part of the reason the city's architectural fabric has survived as well as it has.
