Springfield Baptist: The Oldest Black Congregation in America

Near Augusta, Georgia

The congregation that would become Springfield Baptist Church first gathered not in Augusta but across the Savannah River, at Silver Bluff, South Carolina, sometime between seventeen seventy-four and seventeen seventy-five, two years before the Declaration of Independence. Historian Walter Brooks concluded that the Augusta congregation represents the oldest continuously existing Black Baptist church in the country, tracing its lineage through those Silver Bluff gatherings to its formal organization in Augusta in seventeen eighty-seven.

Its first pastor was Jesse Peters Galphin, an enslaved man whose enslaver permitted him to receive ministerial training. That a congregation this large and this active could exist at all during the antebellum era reflects an extraordinary act of collective determination against legal structures specifically designed to prevent it. By eighteen twenty-four, under Pastor Jacob Walker, Springfield had grown to one thousand members, making it the largest single congregation in the entire Georgia Baptist Association.

The church's historical significance does not end with its age. In eighteen sixty-six, the year after the Civil War ended, Springfield hosted the first meeting of the Georgia Equal Rights Association, which became the Georgia Republican Party the following year. The Augusta Baptist Institute was founded within these walls. Twelve years later it moved to Atlanta, where it grew into Morehouse College. Even in eighteen fifty-nine, when slave codes banned Sunday school instruction, Springfield ran classes anyway.

The current building on Reynolds Street was completed in eighteen ninety-seven. It stands on the same ground where freed people organized politically, where the school that became a university was born, and where a congregation that predates the United States itself has worshipped for more than two centuries without interruption. For a country still working out what freedom means, that continuity is its own kind of argument.
