The Tubman Museum: The Southeast's Largest African American Museum
Near Macon, Georgia
Founded in nineteen eighty-one, the Tubman Museum grew from a local community project into the largest African American art, history, and culture museum in the entire Southeast. Its centerpiece is a sweeping mural called From Africa to America, painted by Macon artist Wilfred Stroud, that traces the journey of Africans to America from sixteen nineteen through the twenty-first century. The museum's galleries document the achievements of Black inventors, military leaders, artists, musicians, and writers.
The building eventually expanded to nearly fifty thousand square feet to house its growing collections. Named for Harriet Tubman, the museum sits as a permanent institution in the heart of middle Georgia, drawing visitors from across the country to Macon.
