Vinings, Georgia

Georgia

Vinings is an unincorporated community clinging to the bluffs above the Chattahoochee River in Cobb County, just northwest of Atlanta. Its name comes from William Vining, an assistant engineer on the Western and Atlantic Railroad who oversaw bridge work across the river in the eighteen forties. During the Civil War, Vinings Mountain is said to have given Union General William Sherman his first view of Atlanta in July of eighteen sixty-four.

Today Vinings is an affluent residential and retail enclave, known for Vinings Jubilee, an upscale village center built into the hillside, and for its sweeping views of the Chattahoochee corridor. It has never incorporated, preferring to remain a Cobb County pocket of historical character just outside the Atlanta city limits.
