Woodbine, Georgia: Camden County's Courthouse Town

Georgia

Woodbine is the county seat of Camden County, Georgia, one of the state's oldest counties, established in seventeen seventy-seven as one of Georgia's original counties. The town itself was took shape in eighteen ninety-three, when the railroad reached Camden County. It took the name Woodbine from the native honeysuckle vine that grew thickly along the nearby creeks and marshes.

Incorporated in nineteen oh eight, it remained a modest trade center serving the turpentine, timber, and fishing industries of the Georgia lowcountry for most of the twentieth century. Today Woodbine is one of the smallest county seats in Georgia by population, home to about one thousand residents, and the Camden County Courthouse anchors a compact downtown still built to the scale of a nineteenth-century market town.
