Church Row, Kalahikiola

Hawaii

This corner of North Kohala has long been a gathering place for worship, anchored by the historic Kalahikiola Church. The name is often translated as the day of salvation approaches. The mission was founded in eighteen forty-one by Reverend Elias Bond and his wife Ellen, who sailed from New England to this remote northern tip of the Big Island.

After an early thatched chapel blew down in a storm, the congregation built a lasting stone church. The church was built entirely by hand from stone and mortar. It was consecrated in eighteen fifty-five.

An earthquake in two thousand six collapsed parts of its walls, and the community painstakingly rebuilt it.
