Wildland Firefighters National Monument

Near Boise, Idaho

On the grounds of the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise stands the Wildland Firefighters National Monument, dedicated in May of two thousand. The memorial was born from grief: in July of nineteen ninety-four, fourteen firefighters died on Storm King Mountain in Colorado when the South Canyon Fire overran their position. The Wildland Firefighter Foundation, formed to support fallen fighters and their families, drove the effort to build something lasting on the grounds of the agency that coordinates the nation's wildfire response. Bronze statues of firefighters anchor the site, surrounded by plaques honoring men and women killed in the line of duty.
