Joliet Regional Airport
Illinois
Joliet Regional Airport has been landing planes since the nineteen thirties, making it one of the older general aviation fields in the Chicago suburban corridor. The airport's Art Deco hangar building, built in nineteen thirty, earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places for its clean horizontal lines, porthole windows, and the optimism it represents: a small industrial city betting on aviation as its future. Joliet never became a major commercial hub, but the airport served as a training ground for pilots during World War Two and has remained an active general aviation field serving business and recreational fliers who prefer to avoid O'Hare's congestion. The original hangar still stands at the old field, a streamlined relic of nineteen thirties ambition.
