Olympia Fields: Four Majors in the Chicago Suburbs

Illinois

Olympia Fields Country Club, chartered in nineteen fifteen, began as one of the most ambitious golf complexes in the country. The founders originally built seventy-two holes across four courses in the south Chicago suburbs. War and economics trimmed that to two courses, but the ambition on the North Course survived.

The club has hosted four major championships: the United States Open in nineteen twenty-eight and again in two thousand three, plus the PGA Championship in nineteen twenty-five and nineteen sixty-one. The first Olympia Fields president was Amos Alonzo Stagg, the legendary University of Chicago football coach. Jim Furyk won his only major here in two thousand three.

The club has also hosted the United States Senior Open, the United States Amateur, and the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, making it one of the most frequently used major championship venues in the Midwest.
