Auburn: Home of the Classics

Indiana

Auburn, the seat of DeKalb County in northeast Indiana, calls itself the Home of the Classics, and the title is earned. In the early nineteen hundreds, Auburn was the headquarters of the Auburn Automobile Company, which merged with Cord and Duesenberg to form one of the most celebrated luxury car brands in American history. The streamlined Cord Eight Ten and Duesenberg Model J were among the most beautiful automobiles ever built in this country.

The original nineteen thirties national headquarters of the Auburn company is now a National Historic Landmark housing the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, which opened in nineteen seventy-four and displays over one hundred twenty cars across three floors. Auburn itself was founded in eighteen thirty-six and became DeKalb County seat shortly after. The cars put it on the map permanently.
