Crown Hill Cemetery
Near Indianapolis, Indiana
Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis was founded in eighteen sixty-three, when the city's older burial grounds were overflowing with Civil War dead. At five hundred fifty-five acres it is the third largest non-government cemetery in the United States. Poet James Whitcomb Riley, Indiana's beloved dialect voice, is buried here on the highest hill in the city.
President Benjamin Harrison rests here as well, the only president buried in Indiana. Bank robber John Dillinger, shot by federal agents in Chicago in nineteen thirty-four, is buried in the cemetery's Crown Hill section, and his grave remains one of the most visited. The grounds are also an arboretum and a bird sanctuary, which makes Crown Hill, depending on your mood, a place for reflection, history, or a very specific kind of celebrity tourism.
