Five Medals Village

Indiana

On the Elkhart River stood the village of Five Medals, a respected Potawatomi chief whose name came from the peace medallions he had gathered over a lifetime of treaty councils. He traveled to Philadelphia in seventeen ninety-six to meet President Washington, and to the capital again in eighteen oh one to address President Jefferson. He championed farming for his people and signed several treaties.

When the War of Eighteen Twelve came, the village's location made it a target. In September of eighteen twelve, soldiers marching from Fort Wayne found it abandoned and burned the town along with the surrounding crops. His people moved away, and Five Medals fades from the record soon after the war.
