Hoagy Carmichael at the Piano

Indiana

Seated at a bronze Steinway near the Indiana University Auditorium is the man who gave the world Stardust. Hoagy Carmichael was born in Bloomington, studied law right here at this university, and went on to write some of the most beloved songs in the American canon, Stardust, Georgia on My Mind, Heart and Soul, Up a Lazy River. This life size sculpture was created by Bloomington artist Michael McAuley and dedicated in two thousand eight.

It was placed so passersby might feel, just for a moment, that Carmichael is serenading them as they come and go from the cinema. He left Indiana for Hollywood and worldwide fame, but the boy from Bloomington always carried this town in his music.
