Kintner-McGrain House

Indiana

Built in eighteen oh eight on a ridge north of Corydon, the Kintner-McGrain House is the second-oldest surviving building in Harrison County, Indiana. Jacob Kintner put it up the same year Corydon was platted as a town, and he planted giant red cedars out front that gave the property its later nickname, Cedar Glade. Kintner also installed Corydon's first waterworks, running wooden pipe from a spring behind the house to supply his home, his barns, and his tannery across the road, unusual plumbing for a frontier settlement in eighteen oh eight.

The house later sheltered Corydon residents during Morgan's Raid in July of eighteen sixty-three, when Confederate cavalry under General John Hunt Morgan swept through southern Indiana. Three families, Kintners, McGrains, and Bennetts, have held it over more than two centuries. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
