Larwill, Once Called Huntsville

Indiana

The town of Larwill began as Huntsville, laid out on the thirteenth of November, eighteen fifty four, along the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne, and Chicago Railroad. The surrounding country was thick timber then, and the railroad turned the little settlement into a busy trading point, first for lumber as the woods came down, then for grain once the land was cleared. In eighteen sixty six the name was changed to Larwill, honoring William and Joseph Larwill, the resident engineers who oversaw building the line through here.

It also helped that another Indiana town already claimed the name Huntsville. The railroad kept the depot busy for decades. The trains are quieter now, but the name still marks the spot.
