Miller Beach

Indiana

Miller Beach sits in the northeast corner of Gary, Indiana, separated from the rest of that steel city by the Indiana Dunes. It grew as its own lakeshore resort community, when Chicagoans took the train out to swim and picnic on the Lake Michigan shore. The independent town of Miller incorporated, then was absorbed into Gary in nineteen eighteen as the steel mills expanded.

The dunes here rise as high as one hundred feet, and the landscape is a peculiar mix of industrial skyline and wilderness. Indiana Dunes National Park now preserves the surrounding shoreline. Miller Beach itself retains a small-town feel, with bungalows tucked between the dunes and a lakeshore that feels worlds away from the Interlake and U.

S. Steel plants just a few miles to the west.
