Richland-Plummer Creek Covered Bridge

Indiana

This is a surviving covered bridge in Greene County, a survivor from an age when dozens of them spanned these creeks. In eighteen eighty three the county handed a contract to the Kennedy family, master bridge builders, and they raised this Burr arch truss across Richland Creek on stone abutments. Notice the Italianate touches and the board and batten siding.

The Kennedys treated bridges as architecture, not just function. The covered roof was practical too. It sheltered the wooden trusses from rain and rot, which is exactly why this one outlasted the others.

It was closed, repaired, and reopened more than once over the years, and it joined the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen ninety three. Drive slowly. You are crossing the work of nineteenth century hands.
