Future Birthplace of Captain Kirk
Iowa
Welcome to Riverside, the little town that boldly claimed the final frontier. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry once wrote that Captain James Kirk would be born in a small town in Iowa. In nineteen eighty five, a Riverside councilman named Steve Miller read that line and thought, why not here.
At a council meeting in March of that year, the town voted unanimously to declare itself the Future Birthplace of Captain James Tiberius Kirk. The monument near city hall lists a birth date of March twenty second, two thousand two hundred twenty eight, more than two centuries from now. The town leaned all the way in, hosting an annual festival called Trekfest and opening a Star Trek museum.
It is fiction made local, and proudly so.
