Midwest Electric Railway

Iowa

Just outside Mount Pleasant, Iowa, sits an operating electric railway museum. The Midwest Electric Railway collects and runs vintage trolleys saved from cities that once scrapped them. Today the museum operates historic electric cars, including interurban coaches, city streetcars, and work equipment dating from the eighteen nineties through the nineteen sixties.

The cars come from cities that once ran electric transit systems before the automobile era dismantled them. Visitors can ride the same cars that once carried commuters through American downtowns. The museum is part of the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion complex, which each Labor Day weekend draws large crowds to celebrate the machinery of rural America.
