Morningside University: Rescued from the Panic of 1893

Iowa

Morningside University has an origin story that begins in failure and ends in rescue. In eighteen eighty-nine, a group of Sioux City business leaders and Methodist ministers launched an ambitious project called the University of the Northwest. They bought a twenty-five-acre campus on the developing Morningside Heights neighborhood west of downtown, built a stone hall, and enrolled students with the vision of creating a major university on the Missouri River bluffs.

Then the Panic of eighteen ninety-three arrived. The financial collapse that swept through the American Midwest in the early nineties hit Sioux City particularly hard. The city had been a speculative boomtown through the late eighteen eighties, and the crash was severe. The University of the Northwest could not survive it. The institution closed in eighteen ninety-four, and its campus sat idle.

The Methodist Episcopal Church stepped in that same year. The Church purchased the twenty-five-acre campus for twenty-five thousand two hundred fifty dollars, a bargain price for a failed dream, incorporated Morningside College on December fifth, eighteen ninety-four, and repurposed the existing buildings for the new institution.

Morningside grew steadily through the twentieth century as a liberal arts college with strong ties to the United Methodist Church. The campus it occupies today, sixty-eight acres with twenty-one buildings, is largely covered by the Morningside College Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, an unusual distinction for an active campus. In twenty twenty-one the institution formally elevated its designation from college to university.

Behind this campus, behind the limestone buildings and the formal name, is the original story: a community's ambition that collapsed in a financial panic, retrieved by a church that bet on the same neighborhood a second time, and built something that lasted.
