Sioux City to Smithland Stagecoach Trail
Iowa
Before highways, this was a lifeline. In the eighteen fifties, a stage and military road threaded the bluffs of the Little Sioux and Missouri valleys, linking the new river town of Sioux City with Smithland to the southeast. Stagecoaches and freight wagons rolled through, because for most travelers the only ways into this corner of Iowa were by steamboat or by coach.
Smithland was one of the oldest settlements in Woodbury County, and it sits at the edge of a darker chapter. In the brutal winter of eighteen fifty six and eighteen fifty seven, settlers here disarmed the camp of the Dakota leader Inkpaduta. His band moved north along these same valleys toward the lakes, where the violence known as the Spirit Lake Massacre would soon follow.
This quiet trail carried both commerce and consequence.
