The Lone Star: Last of the Wooden Sternwheelers
Iowa
Dry-docked in Le Claire at the Buffalo Bill Museum sits the Lone Star, the oldest surviving wooden-hull steam-powered towboat in the United States. Built in eighteen sixty-eight, the Lone Star worked the Mississippi, Ohio, and Missouri Rivers for nearly a century. It was taken out of service in nineteen sixty-eight and now rests at the museum.
It was declared a National Historic Landmark in nineteen eighty-nine. You can walk through it today.
