Breezedale Historic District

Kansas

This stretch of homes at the south end of Massachusetts Street in Lawrence was an early attempt at a planned suburb. A developer laid out what was called the Breezedale Addition, building a handful of similar houses in the early nineteen hundreds, all in the Classical Revival style that was fashionable at the time.

It was a small but deliberate idea, to create an identifiable, leafy neighborhood with its own name and character, rather than letting houses go up one at a time. Several of the homes are built of stone and wood frame over stone foundations. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognized as an early chapter in how American towns began imagining the suburb.
