Christ Pilot Me Hill
Kansas
Look to the hillside just east of the little town of Bazine, and you will see three words spelled out in white rock, Christ Pilot Me. The idea began in early nineteen forty, in the anxious months of the Second World War. A Bazine schoolteacher named Kenneth Timken thought how fitting those words would look laid across a neighbor's hill.
In that same year, local young people from the local churches climbed up and set the rocks in place, spelling out the prayer where everyone passing on the road below could read it. Three crosses were added on the hill later. For generations it has served as a landmark not only for travelers on the highway but for pilots flying overhead, a quiet roadside prayer visible for miles across the open Kansas prairie.
