Red Rocks: William Allen White's Home in Emporia

Kansas

Red Rocks is the name of the home where William Allen White, editor of the Emporia Gazette, lived from eighteen ninety-nine until his death in nineteen forty-four. The house stands on Exchange Street. From this address he wrote editorials that were reprinted in newspapers from New York to San Francisco, counted among his friends and correspondents presidents from Theodore Roosevelt to Franklin Roosevelt, and became one of the most celebrated small-town journalists in American history.

His daughter Mary died in a horseback riding accident near here in nineteen twenty-one, and the elegy he wrote for her in the Gazette, entitled Mary White, remains among his best-known writings. Red Rocks is now a Kansas state historic site and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
