Daniel Boone's Trail
Kentucky
This marker stands along the path of one of America's great pioneer roads, the trail Daniel Boone blazed from North Carolina into Kentucky.
In seventeen sixty nine Boone first crossed the mountains into Kentucky, and in seventeen seventy five he led axemen to cut a road for settlers, the route that became known as the Wilderness Road. It ran from the Virginia and Tennessee frontier, through the Gap, and on across Rockcastle County toward the Bluegrass and the fort at Boonesborough.
In the early nineteen hundreds, patriotic groups including the Daughters of the American Revolution placed a long chain of markers tracing Boone's trail across several states. They wanted travelers on the new highways to remember that the road beneath their wheels followed the footsteps of the pioneers who first opened the way west.
