Fort Twitty

Kentucky

This is the site of Fort Twetty, often called the first fort built in Kentucky. In March of seventeen seventy-five, Daniel Boone and a party of axmen were cutting the trail that became Boone's Trace, the road that would open Kentucky to settlement. Camped overnight near here, they were attacked before dawn.

Captain William Twetty was mortally wounded, and an enslaved man named Sam was killed. Because Twetty and another wounded man, Felix Walker, could not be safely moved, the company threw up a small log shelter for them, a place to defend and to heal. That shelter became known as Fort Twetty. Twetty died of his wounds and was buried here. The party waited for Walker to mend, then carried him on a litter to the Kentucky River, where they founded the settlement of Boonesborough.
