Fulton Burying Ground

Kentucky

This old burying ground marks one of the first footholds of American settlement on this stretch of the Ohio River. In seventeen ninety-eight, Samuel Fulton and his father John, both soldiers of the American Revolution, arrived here with John's wife Jane, another son, a brother in law, and their families. Together they made what is remembered as the first permanent settlement at present day Rising Sun.

The Fultons had migrated from Pennsylvania, where they are said to have helped found a Presbyterian church, and they helped establish one here as well. As a piece of family trivia, Samuel Fulton is said to have been a cousin of Robert Fulton, the inventor famous for the steamboat. The cemetery holds Revolutionary War veterans among its pioneers, and a marker placed by the Daughters of the American Revolution honors these founding families.
