Historic Locust Grove

Near Louisville, Kentucky

This Federal-style plantation house on the eastern edge of Louisville was built beginning around seventeen ninety by Major William Croghan, a former surveying partner of George Rogers Clark who married Clark's sister Lucy. The house became the final home of George Rogers Clark himself, the Revolutionary War general who seized the Northwest Territory and is considered the founder of Louisville. Clark moved in with his sister in eighteen oh nine, in poor health and largely forgotten, and died here in eighteen eighteen.

But Locust Grove's most famous visitors passed through earlier: in November of eighteen oh six, William Clark and Meriwether Lewis stopped here after their return from the Pacific, weeks after the expedition had reached St. Louis. Other prominent figures are said to have visited as well.

Locust Grove is now a National Historic Landmark open for tours.
