National Corvette Museum: Eight Cars, One Sinkhole
Near Bowling Green, Kentucky
The National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green opened in nineteen ninety-four, just across the road from the plant that builds every Corvette. General Motors has assembled every Corvette in Bowling Green since nineteen eighty-one. The museum became internationally famous on February twelfth, twenty fourteen, when a sinkhole opened beneath its Skydome rotunda at about five forty in the morning.
The hole was forty feet wide, sixty feet long, and thirty feet deep. Eight cars fell in, including a one-millionth Corvette, a nineteen sixty-two Tuxedo Black model, and a pace car. Security cameras caught the whole thing, the footage went viral, and suddenly a Kentucky car museum was front-page news worldwide.
All eight cars were eventually recovered, and three were restored. South-central Kentucky sits on karst limestone: sinkholes can open anywhere, anytime.
