Oak Grove, Kentucky
Kentucky
Oak Grove, Kentucky is a small city that has been shaped almost entirely by Fort Campbell next door, the massive Army base that straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee state line. The base, established in nineteen forty-two, is home to the storied One Hundred and First Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles, who parachuted into Normandy on D-Day and held Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Oak Grove grew up around the base's main gate as a strip of shops, motels, and services catering to soldiers and their families.
With a population of around eight thousand, the city's economy and identity are almost entirely military. If Fort Campbell moved, Oak Grove would likely vanish with it.
