Park City: The Junction That Sent Tourists to the Cave

Near Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

The spot known today as Park City was called Three Forks in its earliest days, a stagecoach stop settlement. When the Louisville and Nashville Railroad reached the area in eighteen fifty-nine, the settlement became Glasgow Junction, the departure point for a branch line serving Glasgow to the east. In eighteen eighty-six, a line called the Mammoth Cave Railroad opened here, carrying tourists several miles south to the entrance of Mammoth Cave.

The tiny train ran for decades, hauling visitors who had come by mainline rail from Louisville and Nashville. The post office changed the town's name to Park City in nineteen thirty-eight. The old railroad grade is now a hiking and biking trail through the national park.
