The Beast: Western Kentucky's Deadliest Tornado
Kentucky
On the night of December tenth, two thousand twenty-one, a tornado locals called The Beast tore through western Kentucky for nearly three hours, traveling one hundred sixty-five miles. It was an EF four, one rating below the maximum, and it moved through eleven counties, devastating Mayfield, Dawson Springs, Princeton, and Bremen. Fifty-seven people were killed, making it the deadliest tornado in Kentucky history.
Among the dead were workers trapped inside a candle factory in Mayfield that collapsed around them. The storm crossed into Kentucky from Tennessee in the Jackson Purchase region and finally dissipated far to the northeast, near the Falls of Rough in Grayson County. It struck in December, months outside the typical tornado season, surprising a population with little warning time.
The wreckage in Mayfield and Dawson Springs took years to clear, and rebuilding continued long after national attention moved on. This stretch of far-western Kentucky still carries the physical and community scars of that December night.
