The West-Metcalfe House
Kentucky
This brick house has stood since eighteen hundred, built by a Revolutionary War soldier named Captain Isaac West. He came to this country along the Cumberland River in the late seventeen nineties, received a land grant, and made the bricks for his home with his own hands. It was the first brick house in the area, the work of a man building something to last.
Six decades later, the Civil War came to its doorstep. In December of eighteen sixty-one, the Confederate general Felix Zollicoffer used this house as his headquarters just before the Battle of Mill Springs, sometimes called Logan's Crossroads. That battle was a crushing Confederate defeat, delivered by Union forces under George Thomas.
As the wounded came in, the West house and its yard became a hospital. The home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen seventy-seven.
