Walton, Kentucky

Kentucky

One of the oldest settlements in Boone County, this community traces its roots to a post office called Gaines, later renamed Gaines Cross Roads. Then in eighteen forty the town of Walton was established, said to be named in honor of George Walton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The Covington-Lexington Turnpike ran straight through, and when the railroads arrived in the second half of the nineteenth century, Walton grew into a thriving town. Today the city straddles the Boone and Kenton county line, and the Declaration signer's name still greets drivers passing through on their way between Cincinnati and Lexington.
