Gibsland: Last Morning of Bonnie and Clyde

Louisiana

On the morning of May twenty-third, nineteen thirty-four, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow pulled into this small Bienville Parish town for what would be their last meal. They ate breakfast at Ma Canfield's Cafe on Main Street. Then they drove south on what is now Louisiana Highway One Fifty-Four into a stand of pine trees where six lawmen were already waiting.

The posse, led by Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, opened fire without warning and killed both of them in seconds. The ambush site is south of town. Today the former cafe on Main Street houses the Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum, once managed by Boots Hinton, whose own father, Ted Hinton, was one of the lawmen in the posse that day.
