Hermon's Soldier's Monument
Maine
This granite monument honors the Civil War dead of Hermon, Maine. It was raised around the turn of the twentieth century, with the town and the local chapter of the Women's Relief Corps sharing the cost, the veterans' auxiliary that did so much of this quiet memorial work.
It stood for more than a century at Hermon Corner, on flat ground the old militia had used as a parade field, a place locals simply called the Plain. In recent years, residents voted to move it. Crews carefully took the stone pieces apart and rebuilding them at the town's Veterans Memorial Park, in front of the elementary school.
