His Lordship's Kindness
Near Dc Northern Virginia, Maryland
The name sounds like a footnote to a sermon. His Lordship's Kindness is a plantation estate east of Clinton, Maryland, built in the seventeen eighties for Prince George's County planter Robert Darnall. The property traces to a seventeen oh three land grant of seven thousand acres to Colonel Henry Darnall from Charles Calvert, third Baron Baltimore, a gesture of patronage that gave the estate its peculiar name.
By the time Henry Darnall died in seventeen eleven, he had accumulated tens of thousands of acres and enslaved many people. The main house, a five-part Georgian mansion, is a National Historic Landmark and still stands.
