Western Maryland No. 202: The Last Mainline Survivor

Maryland

Sitting in Hagerstown City Park, Western Maryland locomotive number two oh two is one of only two surviving steam engines from the old Western Maryland Railway, and the only surviving mainline steam locomotive the railroad ever owned. Baldwin Locomotive Works built her in July nineteen twelve as one of nine identical Class K-two Pacific-type engines, designed for speeds exceeding ninety miles per hour on the passenger runs between Hagerstown and Baltimore.

She served for four decades, getting a valve gear overhaul in nineteen thirty-eight and conversion to burn oil in nineteen forty-seven. Two oh two pulled her last revenue run in nineteen fifty-two. Rather than scrap her, the Western Maryland Railway essentially rebuilt the locomotive and donated it to the children of Hagerstown, placing it on display in City Park where it has stood ever since. She was added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen eighty-four.
