Cobbler's Corner: Miles Standish Surveys the Cape
Near Providence, Massachusetts
In June of sixteen forty, Miles Standish paused here. The military captain of Plymouth Colony was scouting this area, and by local tradition one of his men needed to stop and have his boots cobbled. The spot has been called Cobbler's Corner ever since.
Standish is mostly remembered for his military role and, much later, for the Longfellow poem that borrowed his name. But in sixteen forty he was doing the practical work of a colony that needed to map and measure its expanding territory. A marker was later placed here to preserve the story.
Standish's survey helped open the land that became the town of Mansfield.
