Heritage Museums and Gardens, Sandwich

Near Plymouth, Massachusetts

On one hundred acres of gardens along Shawme Pond in Sandwich sits a museum that began as one man's car collection and became something considerably more ambitious. Josiah Lilly the Third, heir to the Eli Lilly pharmaceutical fortune, started collecting antique automobiles in nineteen sixty-four and opened Heritage Museums and Gardens in honor of his father. The automobile gallery, housed in a replica of the Shaker Round Barn from Hancock, Massachusetts, displays forty American-made cars from eighteen ninety-nine through nineteen sixty-two, including an eighteen ninety-nine Winton Motor Carriage and a nineteen oh nine steam car used as the first official presidential automobile. The surrounding gardens hold a nationally significant collection of rhododendrons hybridized by Cape Cod horticulturist Charles Dexter, more than a thousand varieties of daylilies, and a working nineteen nineteen carousel.
