Bagley Inn: Michigan's First Tavern Keeper
Near Detroit, Michigan
The frame building here was completed in eighteen thirty-three as the second home of Bagley's Tavern, and it stands as one of the oldest surviving structures in Oakland County. Amasa Bagley arrived in this area in eighteen nineteen with his family and four other settlers, making him among the very first Americans to put down roots in what would become southeastern Michigan. He opened a log-cabin tavern in the eighteen twenties to serve the trickle of travelers coming through.
Bagley's civic role grew alongside his business: he was appointed associate judge, and the crossroads around the tavern became known as Bagley's Corners. The tavern served as a gathering point for the early community, the kind of place where land transactions were recorded, travelers rested, and local disputes got sorted. Oakland County today is one of the most populous in Michigan.
